Drilling Debate Expected
The Senate Interior-Environment Subcommittee will mark up its fiscal 2009 bill Wednesday, with the full committee scheduled to follow suit a day later.

Panel members will almost certainly have to deal with the divisive issue of whether to expand offshore areas available for oil and gas drilling.

Republican Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Christopher S. Bond of Missouri wrote colleagues on July 14 to say they would offer an amendment to lift a moratorium on drilling off most of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

"High gas prices are impacting every segment of American life, from police and fire protection to school bus schedules to family vacations," they wrote. "Congress must allow production of new supplies of domestic oil and gas."  Take Action Now!
